Gibson Les Paul - Which Guitar is best for you?
A guitar is an expensive musical instrument. And it could cost well over $1000 depending on which guitar you get. So choosing the right guitar for you is a big thing that you need to do, whatever people say, what you like is up to you. Before you buy anything make sure you try it out, play with all of the settings on it, to make sure it is exactly what you want.
Different guitars have different sounds, at first you may not even notice the difference, but over time your ears will get more sensitive and you will be able to tell a huge difference between guitars, getting a sound you like is one of the most important things when choosing your new guitar, so don’t walk into your local guitar shop and ask to try the guitar that you think looks the nicest, before you even step foot in the shop, decide what sound you want, and have this decision based on what style of music you want to play.
The tone, strings and pickups of the guitar will need to be taken into account, for example, if you want to play indie music, you will not want active EMG’s that give you the ability to pull of huge pinch harmonics, simple single coil pickups will be fine, and they will sound better for playing that style of music than the EMG’s. For playing metal, the EMG’s will sound a lot better than single coils on an indie or jazz guitar, as they will be heavier and sound a lot more like metal when played through the same amp.
Another thing that needs to be considered when trying you guitar is the amp you currently have. The new guitar may sound amazing through the amps in the shop, as those amps will be worth thousands. If the amp you currently use is not in the shop, ask the shop workers if there is anything that will sound similar, or if there is any way to get the same effect through other amps. Or if you are thinking about getting a new amp in the near future, try that amp with the guitar, it might sound totally different, and you may not even like it.
The looks of a guitar might be the first thing that draws your eye to it, and maybe a lot of others eye’s if you end up playing gigs, but be sure that you like the sound, the feel and how it plays, not just the looks. And if you are one of those people that think anything without spikes is not cool, think again, if you go to shows you will be surprised. For example went to see a death metal band the other week, and they were using Ibanez, Gibson Les Paul’s and Jacksons. They did not buy the guitars because of the looks, but because of the sound, how it plays and simply because they like it.
